Who needs pancakes mix when you can make the perfect old fashioned pancakes at the comfort of your own home? Putting them together is as simple as mixing up the packet. Sure, it requires a few more steps, but the fluffiness is unmatched. You have to at least try it once to know what I mean.
🍽 What You Need For Old-Fashioned Pancakes
I bet you can find all the components to these delicious pancakes in your home already. These are classic ingredients such as:
- Flour - all-purpose flour is best, but feel free to use half whole wheat for some more fiber.
- Baking powder - 3 and a half teaspoons, it’s the key to the airiness of these pancakes
- Granulated sugar - 1 and a half tablespoons are just enough even if it might seem like it isn’t.
- Salt – a dash to make the sweetness pop.
- Milk - use any milk you prefer, like skim milk or reduced fat. I still don’t know how it comes out with non-dairy because I haven’t attempted it yet.
- Egg - one egg allows the dough to expand.
- Butter - for that smooth texture and soft flavor, but melt it first.
🔪 How To Make Old-Fashioned Pancakes

The way to get the airiest pancakes every time, it’s important to sift the dry components, which gets rid of any clumps and ensures a light texture.
Put the baking powder, sugar, salt, and flour in a sieve to sift. Then pour in your wet components and whisk until blended. While you heat up the pan over the stove, set your batter aside to rest for at least 5 minutes. Scoop up ⅓ cup of your batter into your oiled warm pan and put the cover on. Set the heat on medium-low and cook until it starts forming bubbles. Turn your pancake over and cook for a few other minutes without the lid.
🧊 What To Serve With Pancakes?
Pancakes always go nicely with fruit cuts for breakfast, but to add a Sunday brunch touch on it, make them in smaller portions and accompany them with some eggs and cooked bacon.
If you have time to spare, give an extra treat to your family by preparing some homemade fruit compote or syrup to pour over your pancakes. Honey or maple syrup are also both a classic.
